The Artist: For the world who does not know Meera George, I’d like to present her to you as I know her. A passionate human being with a heart full of love. Art for her is Life – physically, emotionally and spiritually. It is an extension of who she is. She is the Artist and she is the Art.

Meera’s art journey started as a young child. She pursued B.A Fine Art from College of Art, New Delhi followed by M.A Fine Art from University of Kent, England. She has been the recipient of 5 international art grants & residencies; traveled, exhibited, conducted workshops world over and taught art both at school and university in India and abroad. She is an interdisciplinary visual artist.

Her current venture “Class Art” http://www.classart.in/ is a unique, one of a kind initiative for children of all ages to be exposed and challenged to endless possibilities of experimenting with various mediums and techniques, experience freedom of expression and most importantly encouraged to think out of the box! Meera mentors her students to use art in an unconventional way to express life.

In this artwork, Meera’s take on ‘The Great Wave’ by Japanese Artist Hokusai is sensitive. She showcases how Nature is the great balancer. The newspaper bits densely collaged show how much of our natural resources we consume. The surgical gloves represent the rogue wave of the sea that is swallowing up the trash we throw at nature. But a closer look will reveal it is just not the garbage alone but it is the human life that will get engulfed along the way. Nature’s capacity to establish balance is quite visible. The choice of material used by Meera is representational of what she sees around her in the world. It is a brilliant way to capture how we endanger life on this planet without a care. She wants people to be conscious and reflective of their actions.

Material used: Mixed media on ply, newspaper, found objects, surgical gloves and acrylic paint.

Inspiration: The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Japanese ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai is a wood block print created by him and published circa 1829 – 1833 as part of his series “Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji”. It is one of the most popular and recognizable works of Japanese art in the world.
